Newark Norseman volleyball scored a sweet repeat as 1A state champions during the IHSA state finals. Led by junior outside hitter Madi Malone, the Norseman defeated Illinis Bluffs 25-19 and 25-22 in the finals.
This was the third trip to the state championship series in as many years and the second championship win. Malone gave the Norseman 10 kills and 6 digs while teammate Meggie Scott finished with 11 digs. Setter Taylor Christian had 17 assists and Mattie Chapman added six kills to make the victory a team effort.
This was career win 504 for Norseman Coach Tonya Grayson. Newark finished the season 41-2.
Illini Bluffs managed to keep the game close for the first 20 points in Game 1. Then the Lady Norseman went on a 5-0 run led by 2 Chapman kills. Newark was helped by 3 Lady Tiger hitting errors to win Game 1.
The Lady Tigers kept the score close during the early volleys of Game 2 but then fell behind. The Tigers rallied to bring the score to 24-22 before Newark sophomore Williams put the game away.
The Lady Norseman will be a strong contender next year returning most of their starters. Chapman will move on to play in Lakeland Florida for Southeastern University.
