Newark Norseman Repeat As 1A Volleyball Champions

Newark Norseman volleyball scored a sweet repeat as 1A state champions during the IHSA state finals.  Led by junior outside hitter Madi Malone, the Norseman defeated Illinis Bluffs 25-19 and 25-22 in the finals.

This was the third trip to the state championship series in as many years and the second championship win.  Malone gave the Norseman 10 kills and 6 digs while teammate Meggie Scott finished with 11 digs.  Setter Taylor Christian had 17 assists and Mattie Chapman added six kills to make the victory a team effort.

This was career win 504 for Norseman Coach Tonya Grayson.  Newark finished the season 41-2.

Illini Bluffs managed to keep the game close for the first 20 points in Game 1.  Then the Lady Norseman went on a 5-0 run led by 2 Chapman kills.  Newark was helped by 3 Lady Tiger hitting errors to win Game 1.

The Lady Tigers kept the score close during the early volleys of Game 2 but then fell behind.  The Tigers rallied to bring the score to 24-22 before Newark sophomore Williams put the game away.

The Lady Norseman will be a strong contender next year returning most of their starters.  Chapman will move on to play in Lakeland Florida for Southeastern University.
